The success of Kush Shellfish is reliant on a clean and sustainable aquatic ecosystem. The wild Atlantic waters which shape the rugged Irish coastline meets the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and the cold fresh waters flowing from Irish bog lands. This is one of the last remaining ecosystems of this type in Europe.
Our operations have been fine-tuned to be environmentally sensitive with a clear commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and continously improving our sustainable practices.
Kush Shellfish has conducted the first carbon footprint in Ireland of our organic rope mussel production. While being as nutritious as meat, the carbon footprint of mussels is closer to vegetables. Mussels feed on phytoplankton, microscopic marine algae naturally produced in the environment where they live and mussel farming does not require any chemical treatment.
All our shellfish are grown in a Special Area of Conservation (S.A.C.) designated under the European Union Habitats Directive* as being a vital area of environmental significance.
This means our shellfish are from an exceptional area of natural beauty that is the habitat of protected species and is free from the pollutants found in many other modern marine environments. We at Kush Shellfish see ourselves as an integral part of this valuable eco-system and strive to have the least possible impact on it, with a view to protecting it for future generations.
